More than a third of those took a special trip to do so
With two months passed since the Elizabeth Line finally opened – and 13 years since construction on Crossrail first began – a new YouGov survey of Londoners shows that one in four (24%) have now used the new purple line.
Of this group, one in three (37%) were so keen to experience the long-awaited Tube line – for that is what Londoners consider it, unlike TfL bosses – that they took a special trip out of their way to ride the line and see what it was like.
Nevertheless, most of those who have used it (73%) have done so because it formed a direct part of a route they needed to take.
Novelty seekers will likely have decades yet before they can take a ride on another new underground line. Although Boris Johnson stated his support for Crossrail 2 at the opening of the Elizabeth line, the government forced TfL to shelve plans for the project in 2020 as part of its emergency funding settlement.
