Medical care
The Czech Republic has very good medical care for both, their local citizens as well as international people. Health care is provided by government-run- and private medical facilities. During the time of emergency, outside the working surgery hours, you can always visit the emergency departments in the hospital. In case you have a sudden serious illness you can call the ambulance on 112 all over the country.
Health Insurance
For students from EU/EEA and Switzerland:
If you have valid health insurance in your country, then you apply for the EU health insurance card (EHIC) before coming to Czech Republic. This is the card that is issued by your national health insurance provider. Using the EHIC you can get medical treatments under the same conditions and at the same cost as people insured in that country.
EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance.
For students outside the EU:
Foreign nationals that decide to stay in the country for more than 90 days have to purchase comprehensive health insurance coverage. You will be asked to submit proof of your health insurance while applying for your long-term visa.
The insurance should be contracted with a provider specifically certified to provide such insurance in Czech Republic. Several Czech insurance companies provide the right type of insurance, specifically designed for international students. You can also apply online for this health insurance, and submit your documents from anywhere in the world.
These are the companies that offer discounts to students aged 17 to 26:
– Slavia
– Maxima
– UNIQA
– VZP
– ERGO
– SWISSCARE
